A Century-Old School Reimagined
The original Tisbury School, built in 1929, had fallen into disrepair, prompting community leaders to pursue a progressive, long-awaited solution. Tappé Architects, who had previously worked on the school in the 1990s, were selected in late 2019 to lead the renovation and expansion project. Their phased, community-centered design approach impressed the building committee from the start, balancing respect for the school’s historical character with forward-looking functionality.
A Bold, Functional Transformation
Voters approved a $55 million renovation plan in June 2021, paving the way for comprehensive upgrades. Construction ultimately reached an $81 million budget, making it the largest building project in Tisbury’s history. The transformation added substantial interior space, expanding the facility from its previous 56,000 square feet to about 70,000 square feet, and introduced new features such as a full-sized gymnasium with a performance stage, band room, upgraded cafeteria, and modern classrooms flooded with natural light.
A New Hub for Learning and Community
The renovated school officially reopened for the new academic year starting September 3, 2024, concluding more than two years of construction. The enhanced design features bright media centers on every level, a bridge connecting the old and new sections, uniquely themed color palettes on different floors, and inviting outdoor spaces, including playgrounds, a basketball court, and a “gaga pit” that reflect local design sensibilities. This revitalized campus now stands as both an educational environment and a community centerpiece celebrated by students, staff, and the wider Tisbury community alike.
